Edina Interns 101: How it is Funded

The French Intern Program is 100% Parent-Funded.

  • The Interns receive paychecks through the District’s payroll processing system, but the Normandale PTO and Valley View Extended French Booster Club (EFBC) pay the district the funds to cover those checks.
    • It’s a pass-thru expense for the district, similar to the PTO collecting field trip expenses from parents at the start of the school
  • When Normandale families complete the PTO dues form at the start of the school year, they are asked to support the program:
    • $85 per child plus participation in additional fundraisers
    • Or $155 per child without participation in fundraisers
  • These donations, plus profits generated by Normandale fundraisers like Carnival and the Gift Wrap sale are our primary income streams to fund the program.
  • Valley View families fund the 5 interns at VV through the EFBC ($125 donation per child).

Here’s how the money is used:

  • Our annual operating budget is approximately $126,270
    • Normandale = $97,565
    • Valley View = $28,705
  • This represents 82% of the total Normandale PTO budget.
  • Each Intern costs approximately $5,488 for one school year which includes:
    • Intern stipends -- $2,730
    • J-1 Visa sponsor’s fee -- $700
    • Health insurance -- $855
    • Staff stipends -- $565
    • Expenses related to recruiting, orientations, cultural exchange, etc. $640
